Design and Art Theory

So, for my December schedule, I only have one class...Design and Art Theory (DAT)...since I had transfer credit for my other class this month. DAT basically goes over all the art theories. And over the next ten classes, I'll learn about all of them, including gesturing, values, composition, design, art, perspective, color theory, layout, typography, gestalt, and the creative thinking process. I've already been through two classes, and so far we've talked about gesturing (first two pictures) and values (next two pictures).

On the left, is my first practice with gesturing. In gesturing, you start your drawing by creating shapes that you see in the object. Then you go back and start to refine your lines and shapes. After some practice with that, we were told to switch our pencils to our non-dominant hand and then continue gesturing. The two birds in the pictures were created using my left hand only. The purpose of this exercise was for us to not concentrate on how we sketched, but to concentrate on the actual object that we were sketching. I think this helped me out a lot.





During our second class we concentrated on values, which is the lightness or darkness of an object. So we got these cante crayons (which are very messy, I might add), and started drawing spheres to practice working with values.





So, I've had a lot of fun in this class already and have improved a lot already! I'm really excited to see what's to come in this class!

Ninja Training

So in my DCG (Designing Computer Graphics) class, I was assigned to create an icon set. Like a set of icons that you would see at a zoo, or an airport, or the olympics or whatever. So all of the icons that we made had to have a certain style to them, and then we had to put them into a container of some sort. And then we had to compose them somehow into a display. So this is what I created....

I wanted these to look like the directional signs that you would see at a zoo, and I arranged them onto a pole, for obvious reasons! Anyway, there were three prizes for the top three icon sets in the class, and I was one of the top 3! So that was pretty exciting! And this is what i won.....

So, the moral of the story is....make good icons, so you can become a good ninja!

Elegant Design

This is a logo project that I had to do for my "Designing Computer Graphics" class. Logo development is way harder than i thought it would be, and there's so many different things that you have to take into consideration when creating logos. It's pretty nuts!
Anyway, my professor thought that i did a really good job on these, so that was awesome! He even threw out some interesting ideas for me if I wanted this to be my actual personal logo. One idea was to have my business card shaped like a peanut, to tie in with the elephant theme. i thought that was funny. tell me what you think of it and which one you like best. if you think it sucks or you think i should change something, TELL ME! i wont be hurt!

300 Elves

I was assigned to create a recut of a movie trailer in my "Digital Storytelling Class" We had to combine two or more movies and change the story somehow. So I combined the audio from a "300" Trailer with some video clips from "Elf" to make it appear like the elves were getting ready for battle. I think it turned out alright, but you might need to use some imagination on the voice over parts. haha! let me know what you think.

Living in the Sweaty Ball Sac of America

So, this is me, living in the humid, sweaty ball sac of America (also known as Florida). It's definitely been quite a journey so far...saying goodbye to those i love back in Lincoln, grinding my tires on the inside of my wheel well during the whole 24 hour drive to Florida (because of the immense weight of ALL of my belongings in my car), trying to find furniture to fill up our empty apartment, and most importantly...starting school at this place that they call Full Sail (which I absolutely LOVE!). Seriously, I'm in my second week of school at Full Sail, and I've already learned much more than I could have ever imagined I would! It's awesome! ...very intense ...but awesome!

Last Sunday, Lance and I went to a 6 pm church service at this place called Summit. The worship was alright and I hate to say it, but the message was terrible! The guy basically just read notes the whole time, very monotone-ally i might add. And yes, I did just make up the word, monotone-ally. So anyway, we were kind of bummed that the service sucked and we headed back home to cook up some dinner. Then, kind of out of no where, we decided to go to another church that Lance had heard of somehow. Its called Discovery Church and it was amazing! The service started at 9 pm, so that was kind of weird but we went anyway. And I'm glad we did! The worship rocked my freakin' face off and the pastor guy was incredible! I loved listening to him. He was very good at getting you into the moment. I loved it! The whole church service was really cool, plus, it's mainly for college-aged people, so that helps with the coolness factor also!

Well, it's about 2 in the morning here and that's about all the attention span I have for now...so I'll leave you guys with some pics of our decked-out apartment (it's a work in progress). In the future I'll also be putting up some pics of the school and some of my work that I've been working on.....so stay tuned!
